Well here are the answers to some frequently asked questions about smoke and carbon monoxide detectors:
-When do my smoke and carbon monoxide (CO) detectors expire?
Every smoke and CO detector has a manufactured date on the back of the unit and by knowing the age, you will be able to determine when that unit expires. Every manufacturer has a different timeframe for the expiration of their detector so please check your manufacturers website for your recommended detector expiration timeframe.
-Will my smoke and carbon monoxide (CO) detectors alert me when it stops functioning properly?
A smoke and CO detectors WILL NOT warn you that its “end of life” is near or that their is something wrong with the unit. Testing your detector at least once a month to make sure it functions properly and replacing its batteries every 6 months will ensure the proper function of your detector. Some detectors may even have a green or red light on the front that shows you that it is on but that does not mean it will work during an emergency situation, so frequent testing and inspection of the unit is key.
****Smoke and CO detectors are sometimes recalled by the manufacturer, so please check their website frequently to ensure your detector is not one that is being recalled.
-How do I clean my smoke and carbon monoxide (CO) detectors?
To ensure your smoke and CO detectors functions properly, you should keep them clean by dusting, vacuuming, or using compressed air to rid the unit of any dust buildup that may prohibit it from functioning properly. Never use water or other cleaners as moisture and chemicals can damage the unit.
